The Bond Between Friends

The hour that followed felt like an eternity to the children of Crowood Peak. Jemima tried to tell everyone how brave she’d been when the crows had come for her. She simply couldn’t understand why no one seemed to be listening to her story of heroism, and so she huffed away to sulk in the corner.

Ivy made Isaac boil the kettle and make hot chocolate for everyone. She fetched a damp flannel, and when Eddie, Jennifer and Jamie had carried – well, dragged – Amethyst’s limp body to the sofa, Ivy dabbed her forehead. Amethyst was cold to the touch so she got Jennifer to search the house for the warmest and cosiest blanket she could find so they could wrap Amethyst up nice and toasty until she woke. When her eyes finally fluttered open, they weren’t anywhere near as purple as they had been. Instead of deep plum, they were now a faint lilac colour. Amethyst’s magic was weak. Weaker than it had ever been.

‘Maggie … Maggie! Where’s Maggie?’ Amethyst sat bolt upright abruptly, making everyone jump. She threw the blanket on to the sofa as she launched herself at the window.

‘The crows took her,’ Ivy said.

‘They took her up to the top of the mountain,’ Isaac explained.

‘Where that mean old witch lady lives,’ Darla said, while sucking her thumb.

‘No thanks to you,’ Jemima tutted.

‘No thanks to you, you mean!’ Ivy pointed an accusatory finger across the room to where Jemima had propped herself up against the wall, her arms folded. She looked lonely without Jennifer and Jamie standing behind her, nodding and agreeing with her every word. ‘You are the reason Amethyst is exhausted and weak and might not be able to protect us all. You are the reason Maggie left the house in the first place, because you wouldn’t listen to us, and now my best friend is probably going to get her heart eaten by a wicked witch!’ There was nothing but silence. None of the children in the house were looking at Ivy; instead they were looking at Jemima.

‘Don’t blame me for getting us into this mess. You two are always causing trouble. What is it you call yourselves – the Double Trouble Society? How stupid.’

Ivy had managed to stay strong while Amethyst had been unconscious. She wasn’t by any means the oldest in the room, but she was the most knowledgeable about the situation and that had given her the courage to speak up. But now that Amethyst was awake and taking charge, Ivy felt that courage slip away from her like the magic that was draining from Amethyst. As hot and uncontrollable tears began to pour down her face, Ivy turned away from Jemima, who seemed unaffected by Ivy’s accusations. She joined Amethyst at the window, who placed her hands on her shoulders and gently squeezed.

‘It’s all right, Ivy. We’ll get Maggie back,’ Amethyst whispered, resting her chin on the top of Ivy’s head as they gazed up at the mountain.
